1949 SEASON COLUMBUS MERCHANTS

Manager Bill Stearman

In 1949, the season "expanded" as two team members advanced funds that allowed for the purchase and installation of additional lights and taller light-poles. With these improvements, the Merchants embarked into a new era of night baseball. The team would now play on Thursday and Sunday nights, leaving Sunday afternoons for away games to fulfill their home and home agreements. Twenty Four games would be played, the Merchants Winning 19, Losing only 5.

Bill Stearman was again the team leader. At one time during the season, the locals won 10 consecutive games. Excellent pitching by Glen Eckleman and Von Boll led this well rounded team. Eckleman Won 11 games and Lost but 2. He struck out 167 in 103 innings. That stat again matched an outstanding average set the year before; 1.6 strike-outs per inning pitched. Von Boll registered a fine season also, as he Won 7 games and lost only 2.
