First National Bank

Fourth & Washington (South East Corner)

The First National Bank was organized March 23,1865 and was opened for business the 27th of the following month. Prior to its being converted into a National Bank, the firm was known throughout the country as the Griffith Brothers Bank. But the increase in volume of business the brothers, Hezekiah and Randolph, realized at that time to what extent the resources must be increased, and accordingly sought a charter. The first home of the bank was in a small brick house that stood near the corner of Third and Washington streets. With the growth of business, the original quarters became too small for the firm's needs and in 1866, they moved to the east room of the Griffith Block where they remained until 1875. The next and last move was to their present location. During all the money stringencies of this country since the Civil War, the First National Bank has met all obligations and its assistance to the community has been a vital factor in the steady and substantial growth of Columbus. The present officers are: F T Crump, president; H Griffith, vice president; Frank Griffith, cashier, and Edward C. Collins, assistant cashier.

Irwin's Bank

301 Washington Street

Irwin's Bank was established in 1871 by Joseph I. Irwin, and is now owned by William G. Irwin and Mrs. Linnie Irwin Sweeney. It is a private bank with a capital and surplus of $120,000, though the responsibility to the depositors is not limited by this amount, or its assets of over one million dollars, for in addition the depositors have the security of all of the property, both real and personal, of the owners of the bank. This insures to the depositors the greatest degree of protection afforded by any bank in the state. The officers of the bank are: William G. Irwin, President ; Hugh Th. Miller, Vice president , John W. Suverkrup, cashier; William b. Treadway, assistant cashier.
