Fifth & Jackson Streets (North West Corner)
In February 1879, J R Dunlap, the present head of the Dunlap Company, became a partner in the firm of J W Perkinson and Joseph Gilmore. This partnership continued for about one year when Mr. Perkinson sold to the other two, and W F Coats was made the third member of the firm. After five years under the name of Dunlap, Gilmore, & Coats, it was changed to Dunlap & Coats, by the purchase of Mr. Gilmore's interests. In 1900, J R Dunlap bought the holdings of Mr. Coats and took in as partners his two brothers, the name being changed to Dunlap & Company, which it still bears, though the younger brother sold his interest to L B Newby. The present firm is composed of J R Dunlap, J H Dunlap & L B Newby. The firm does not only handle a complete line of building material, but they are also general contractors and to their credit is due the construction of some of the most prominent buildings of the county and city, including the Federal Building in Columbus. They own a lumber yard and planing mill at Edinburg and one at Hope. The total business of the company will total $250,000 a year. Mr Dunlap, the senior member of the firm, is a public spirited citizen and always identified with any movement tending toward the public good.
