Theo. E. Otto Drug Store

Fifth and Washington Streets (North West Corner)

Along with the growth of Columbus, there has been many changes in the business life of the city, but since February 13, 1884, Theo. E. Otto, the druggist, has remained at the same location. Although not the oldest pharmacist in point of years of business, he is the dean of all in-so-far as there has never been a change in the personnel of the firm. Mr. Otto graduated in the Cincinnati College of Pharmacy in the class of 1883, entering business the following year. The store prior to his purchase, was unprofitable, but in all these years, he has devoted his ability to maintaining a strictly first class pharmacy, never carrying side lines as do most drug stores. When the State Board of Pharmacy was organized, Mr. Otto was appointed a member and served in that capacity for eleven years. His store is on the International Honor Roll of Rexall Drug Stores and is tenth on the list of those in this state. Mr. Otto is one of the most thorough businessmen of the city and whenever anything is proposed for the benefit of the city, he is found to be in the foremost rank.

The May Laundry

330 Fifth Street

O. M. May, owner of the May Laundry was, before entering this line of business, manager of the local telephone company, a position he worked up to by his own efforts and industry, having had no financial support except that derived from his own labor. He bought the laundry in 1912 from John L. Bonham who had established the business of 1892 by opening a small hand laundry. Since Mr. May purchased the plant, he has made many changes in the methods employed. This necessitated the installation of much new and modern machinery. His sole endeavor is to make of it a first class, modern and strictly sanitary plant, with facilities to meet the growing demand for his work without in any manner diminishing the prestige he has with his patrons.
