Regarding This Index

This Index to the 2003 History Of Bartholomew County, Indiana book was written by me over the course of two weeks. As it breaks down, there are 920 reference locators within this index. That averages out to about two locators per indexable page (the book contains 424 pages). Since I do not have to worry about how many "pages" there are available for the index (book publishers normally tell you how many pages will be available), length is not a concern here.

You may wonder how I determine what gets indexed and what doesn't. The relevant information within the text is what gets indexed. Since I don't have to worry about page count, as in relation to publishing this index in the back of a book, there were no limitations regarding how many entries could be physically placed within the confines of a book. It is sometimes difficult to abstain from entering passing mention of a subject, especially when dates and names are mentioned. I've always found it very frustrating to use an index and look up someone's name, only to find the name on a particular page, and no information accompanying it. Because of this, I have tried to keep this index strictly to information relevant to a particular subject, while disregarding passing mention of a subject.

Since there were no publishers in this matter telling me what guidelines they wanted the index to follow, I used the guidelines outlined in the Chicago Manual Of Style, 14th Edition, the basic style requirements of the University of Chicago Press.

This index does not include any references to the illustrations used in the book. Also, I have taken the liberty to list all township schools mentioned in the book. While some school information could be considered as "passing mention of a subject," I felt it an important part of this index to list all the schools that were once a part of Bartholomew County. And, I do plan on providing an illustration index as a separate item in the near future.

Regarding the book

The 2003 History of Bartholomew County, Indiana is copyrighted 2003, by the Bartholomew County Historical Society. This is, by far, the finest reference book regarding the history of Bartholomew County ever assembled in one edition. This book is the second of three books regarding our history, and concentrates on the 20th century (Volume I covered the 19th century).

I have provided this index as a courtesy to those of you who own this book, and hopefully, it will generate enough interest to those of you who don't own it to go out and buy it. To order this book, please click here. This link will take you to the Bartholomew County Historical Society's order page. Please tell them the Historic Columbus Indiana website sent you!
