1948 SEASON COLUMBUS MERCHANTS

Manager: Bill Stearman

 

With the 1948 season the Merchant team moved to the Eighth Street Ballpark.

The 1948 season saw the managerial reins passed to Bill Stearman, then the basketball coach at Waldron M.S. His own personal baseball talents (I.U Varsity Baseball Award and Record winner) and coaching knowledge were big assets to this Merchant team that Won 11 games and Lost 5.

Stearman (of) led the team's offense along with Julian Piercefield (c), Don Scheldt (3b) and Ralph Rutan (c) following. Glen Eckleman Won 7 and Lost 4 while racking up 121 strikeouts in 73 innings ! (1.6 per inng ). Bob Welmer's strong arm provided 4 Wins in the 46 innings he pitched over 8 games. Von Boll was available for only one game and that was a 5 hit Win.
