In February, 1965, the magazine Indiana Business And Industry, published a special 16 page spread on Columbus Indiana. The Historic Columbus Indiana website is pleased to offer this segment to its readers.
The article catches Columbus as the city itself is caught up in many major changes. The quality of education advances through the building of modern schools. A revitalization of the downtown area has just begun with the cleanup of Death Valley and the basic beginnings of Mill Race Park.
I think the best description of Columbus Indiana in 1965 comes from something J. Irwin Miller said at the time:
"We would like to see Columbus become the city in which the smartest, the ablest, the best young families anywhere would like to live...a community that is open in every single respect to persons of every race, color, and opinion. A city that makes them feel welcome and at home here...A community which will offer children the best education available anywhere...A community of strong, outspoken churches, of genuine cultural interests, exciting opportunities for recreation...A community whose citizens are themselves well paid and who will not tolerate poverty for others, or slums in their midst."
Those words could have been spoken yesterday, as our city is, once again, going through major changes...
So, with that said, here is A Special Salute To Columbus, from February 1965.
