Redevelopment Project I, Downtown Columbus Indiana (1960's)

Pictures Of Buildings

L. E. "Gene" Roberts Collection

Before the city of Columbus actually began work on the physical redevelopment of the downtown area, pictures were taken of the front and back of all buildings that were to be razed. The following photos were all taken within an eight block radius of downtown in the mid-1960's.

This collection of photos was found in the basement of City Hall by Mr. Roberts. It is my understanding that, while cleaning up this area, these photos were found and were going to be tossed out. Many thanks to Mr. Roberts for having the foresight to save them, and giving me the chance to make them available on the Historic Columbus Indiana website.

Looking north from the Courthouse. Lou La Bill's Tavern is in the center of the picture               Looking at the back of the Sunoco Station, which was on the north side of 3rd as you left Columbus. This Sunoco station can also be seen in the next row of pictures, third from left               Looking north from the Courthouse. This building was next to Lou La Bill's               The northwest corner of Jackson and Washington Streets.               Another photo of the northwest corner of Jackson & Washington, only this one shows the cafe with the hanging coffee pot. Remember it?

This is the northwest corner of 3rd & Washington.               This view of 3rd Street was all too familiar to me from 1965 through 1966 when we lived in Rosstown. The Sunoco station is on the right.               The Wagner Reddick VFW building sat on the north side of 3rd Street               Looking north from the Courthouse. These buildings were east of Lou La Bills               Everroads sat on the southeast corner of 5th & Jackson. Its a parking lot today. Many memories here. I'd hang out at Everroads waiting for Alan to get off work. Normally, any visits here would entail a trip to the back of Columbus Bar for a tenderloin sandwich!

The following photo is not part of the redevelopment project, but I thought I'd include it here. I'll be putting together another page of Columbus pics soon, and will move it at that time...
